Kirsty Mathieson

PROFILE
Kirsty is qualified to teach both matwork and studio (equipment) Pilates, with a specialist certification in Pre and Post-natal Pilates. Since receiving her certification from the Pilates Foundation in 2006, she has gained a wide range of experience teaching classes, small groups and one on ones in studios around London.
Kirsty’s movement background is in contemporary dance. After qualifying from the Post-graduate Diploma in Community Dance Studies at Laban, she worked as a dancer and dance artist in community and educational settings, encouraging children and adults of all abilities to be creative and confident in the way they moved. Giving clients confidence and knowledge about how to move efficiently and safely, whilst building strength and flexibility, continues to motivate her Pilates practise today.
HEALTH
The Pilates Method aims to re-align and re-balance the body’s structure through gentle but focused exercise.
● Aids injury prevention and rehabilitation
● Beneficial for those with bad backs or general injuries
● Provides a supportive role in rehabilitation after surgery
● Builds better balance and co-ordination, particularly for the elderly
● Offers a safe form of exercise for pregnant women and new mothers
● Develops the function and efficiency of the lungs and thereby circulation
● Offers a safe and beneficial form of exercise for a wide range of medical and muscular-skeletal conditions, including scoliosis, arthritis and multiple sclerosis
Pilates is an invigorating form of exercise that will improve your core stability, strength and posture. It helps restore your body to balance. As a result you will move more efficiently; achieve a strong core; develop longer, leaner muscles and a sense of well-being.
● Improves mobility of the spine
● Delivers muscle tone and flexibility
● Eases stress on joints
● Increases stability for the pelvis and shoulders
● Develops a more efficient and supportive core
● Is enormously beneficial regardless of fitness or age
● Compliments training for athletes and dancers
"I began Pilates training with Kirsty during my first pregnancy when I noticed I was developing slight back pain and I did not want it to become a problem. I enjoyed a back-pain free pregnancy and loved the sessions with Kirsty focussing on balance and strength as well as breathing and relaxation techniques to use during labour. Following the birth of my daughter I resumed training with the focus shifting to posture and regaining my core stability. Kirsty’s passion for posture is great - my posture has improved so much that even my mother commented on it!
I continued training with Kirsty both before and after the birth of my second child and noticed that the physical “bounce-back” from the birth was noticeably easier. I also really cherish my pilates sessions as valuable me-time and always finish them feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and better able to cope with the physical demands of motherhood."
Tamsin Shrider, 35
"I find Kirsty's approach to teaching Pilates inspiring, physically challenging and mentally relaxing. Her classes have done wonders for me helping to keep me supple, strong and feeling good about myself. I've tried classes taught by other teachers, but Kirsty is the best!"
Erin Gill, 38
"Having been operated on for left-hip dysplasia as a child I suffered from hip, lower back, and knee discomfort for many of my adult years. Since starting Pilates over a year ago I've learnt so much about my body and I've become strong enough to protect my hip so I can return to more energetic activities. I've enjoyed compliments about my noticeably improved posture and muscle tone from friends.
Kirsty is a really enthusiastic teacher, she offers excellent guidance and adjustments to the exercises to ensure I keep learning and improving. I always feel energised and more flexible after her classes."
Charlotte Tullett, 29
"Kirsty is encouraging and inspiring. Each class is lead with an infectious enthusiasm and finished with a winning smile. I couldn't recommend her more highly."
Simon Turtle, 47
"I've had 1:1 Pilates classes with Kirsty Mathieson for 3 years now and during that time my body has changed in front of my eyes and I have accessed muscles and movements that had lain dormant for years. Kirsty is an exceptional teacher. She works through a unique combination of grace, rigour and kindness. Lessons are hard work but enjoyable; her observations are keen and her instructions are precise and this makes progress fast and tangible and very satisfying."
Teresa Watkins, 49
"Having attended Kirsty's Pilates classes for a few years now, we are delighted with her programmes and execution of them. She is very proficient and explanatory and tends to all the peoples problems and abilities. We feel confident that she is helping us maintain an inner core strength and flexibility, which enables us to lead a stronger better life."

WORK
PLACE
Most organisations recognise the benefits associated with workplace well-being. Pilates in the workplace can:
•Increase well being
•Relieve stress
•Help those who spend a lot of time behind a desk or on their feet
•Improve focus and concentration
A regular Pilates practice can ease back pain and discomfort in the joints. Classes are designed to improve core stability, strength and posture, with a dynamic flow that will stimulate past the post-lunch energy-dip.
Pilates can be done almost anywhere, space permitting. A meeting room where furniture can be moved will easily suffice.
Price:
Lunchtime workplace classes are £80 per session, paid in blocks of 6.
This can be paid by the organisation, a collective of interested employees taking responsibility for the cost or a combination of both, where the company subsidises the cost and staff pay a nominal fee.

STUDIO/
EQUIP
Studio Pilates can be taught privately or in small groups of 2-4. Classes last between 60-90 minutes. The equipment – Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel – utilise spring loaded resistance, gravity and movement to assist or challenge the body when performing the exercises.
Equipment sessions are particularly helpful in rehabilitating injury, supporting specialised conditions and reaching training goals. The feedback provided by the equipment makes it easier to target specific muscle groups that can be difficult to identify.

POST-
NATAL
Post-natal Pilates offers a gentle, safe return to exercise after giving birth. The exercises focus on strengthening the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, whilst tackling individual postural problems as a result of pregnancy and giving birth.
Whilst bringing back the tone into your muscles to support the demands of feeding and lifting your baby, a Pilates session also aims to leave you feeling calm but energised.
Trying to find a Pilates class that fits in with your schedule as a mum can be very difficult, so I offer small group sessions to mums exercising with or without their babies. The sessions are cheaper than the standard group sessions and also longer – 90 minutes compared to 60 minutes. This is to allow time for mums to drop in and out of the session for feeding, nappy changing etc. and to make sure everyone leaves each session feeling as though they have exercised.
As a group, you will need to decide who can provide the most suitable space in their home. I can provide mats and other small equipment.
A 90 minute Post-natal Pilates session costs £60, to be divided by the group:
2 people at £30 each (usually £35)
3 people at £20 each (usually £25)
4 people at £15 each (usually £20)
5 people at £12 each
